How to Remove Labels from Glass Jars: 5 Simple, Quick, and Effective Methods

To make jams and preserves, you can easily reuse glass jars purchased at the supermarket. But what if the label won’t come off? Here are 5 simple and effective methods to remove labels from glass jars.

Removing labels and stickers from jars can be challenging, whether they are paper adhesive labels or packaging wrappers. If you prefer vegetables in glass, you can keep the jars to refill them with new preserves or sweet jams. But what if the label just won’t budge? Here are 5 simple and effective methods to revive your glass jars.

1. White Vinegar
Fill a shallow container with white vinegar and arrange the jars so that the entire label is submerged. Let them soak for at least 15 minutes. For stubborn labels, heat the vinegar in the microwave or on the stove first. Then, gently peel off the label; if it has soaked long enough, it should come off easily. If not, let it soak a little longer. This method works well for most glass containers and metal cans.

2. Hot Water
Soaking the jars in hot water is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to remove labels. Immerse the containers in a basin or sink filled with hot water (the hotter, the better) for about an hour or overnight. For particularly resistant labels, add a bit of dish soap or laundry detergent. Once soaked, the labels will come off easily; any leftover adhesive can be removed with a wet sponge.

3. Nail Polish Remover or Rubbing Alcohol

3. Nail Polish Remover or Rubbing Alcohol
You can use rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover, or other alcohol-based products to remove labels. Soak a rag, paper towel, or cotton ball in the alcohol, then hold it over the label for about 15 minutes to absorb the liquid. Gently peel the label off; a sponge soaked in alcohol can help remove any remaining glue. For stubborn labels, try using nail polish remover (acetone), but be careful not to stain your clothes.

4. Hair Dryer
Heating the label can make it easier to peel off. Use a hair dryer on high and run it back and forth over the label for about 30 seconds to loosen the glue. If it’s still stuck, continue heating in 30-second intervals until it comes off. A soapy sponge can then be used to remove any leftover adhesive. This method works well for glass jars but is not recommended for plastic containers, which may melt from the heat.

5. Razor Blade
As a last resort, you can use a razor blade to remove the label, but be cautious. Hold the blade at an angle and gently slide it under the edge or corner of the label, pushing until part of it lifts off. Continue peeling off the rest of the label from the detached part. This method may cause the label to come off in pieces, so repeat as needed. It’s not recommended for tin or plastic cans, as it can scratch their surfaces, but it’s safe for glass.
